Today was the last day for me in Tucson. Most people left today, but a few of us decided to stick around a little longer and have a nice ride around the Oro Valley neighborhood. With this being my last day, I've also included a few other group pictures of the trip. I definitely had a great time riding my bike in Tucson in February. It won't be my last time!
Today was all about Mount Lemmon. The ride started off really well and I had set a really good pace for myself on the first half of the climb. Near the top I managed to hit a sharp rock in the road and it tore the sidewall of the old tires I had brought for the trip. I tried to patch it and boot it, but the other tube popped a few minutes later. We had a SAG vehicle for just the occasion, but for some reason he decided to drive ahead to the top, leaving me to stand by the road for almost two hours waiting for him to come back down. There wasn't any way I was going to descend on that tire. I did get a spare wheel for the descent, so I was thankful but also a little bit annoyed since the two hours was unnecessary. Not too mention we chose to do this route on a Sunday and holiday weekend, so there were cars nonstop on the route despite my pictures suggesting otherwise. I'll have to go back sometime and rode the entire ascent and on a less busy day!
Today was sort of like halftime for the training camp for me, so I decided to take a shorter day and ride a few times around the loop in Saguaro National Park. The loop itself reminded me a little bit of riding around Garden of Gods, but obviously with very different scenery. This was ride was more about going slow, stopping often, and taking a lot of pictures.
Today was another four hour and seventy five mile day out, around and up Gates Pass. This was a very cool ride since we also briefly cruised through the western part of Saguaro National Park. We had a nice pace line for most of the day, then solo paced ride up the short pass, then a really fun descent back into town.
Today was an extra credit day for those of us who came in yesterday. Most of the group was arriving today. I was wanting to ride the entire Tucson Loop on this trip, and today was a perfect day to do that. We took the bike path to downtown and then a quick side trip up Sentinel Peak, which is the hill that overlooks downtown and has a large "A" on the side for the university. Most of the four hour and seventy mile ride was on the bike path though. At one point on our route we came to a road closure from all the rain they had fallen the week before, but I still had some fun trying to ride across it until I hit a giant sandbar in the middle...
Facts. This was my first trip down to Tucson to ride a bike and the first time I've flown on a plane with my bike. This morning I had a relatively short flight from COS to Phoenix, then a short drive down to Tucson. I arrived just in time to unpack my bike and do some minor reassembly before hitting the bike path for an hour recovery ride. Everything with the bike was working and I got to catch a nice sunset on the way back.
The culmination of an entire year's worth of hard work! Julia was invited to join varsity and compete in the gameday routine at this year's national competition down in Orlando. She and Stacey worked hard doing AFA concessions to raise money for the trip as well.
While they competed onstage on Friday, most of the time was spent having fun at Disney World with friends and teammates.
