For all you weather fans out there, I found the record for consecutive days of snow on the ground in Colorado Springs on the NOAA website. The official record was set in 1972 and stands at 34 straight days. The measurement criteria is that there has to be at least 1 inch of snow in an area free from obstruction (shadows, buildings, etc) at the official location. The measurement is taken at the same time every day.
I have been going on about how we've had snow on our lot since December 30...which today totals 43 straight days. Of course, the area is between our house (the "north face") and the neighbor's, and never gets sun. That is a big difference from the official measurement criteria, but worth mentioning. Since the temperature is supposed to hit 60 degrees on Monday (with 3 other days hitting the upper 50s), this streak is probably coming to an end at around 45 days.
The official list also confirmed what most of us who have lived here for a long time suspected: that the late 1970s and 1980s were much snowier then recent decades. I realize this post is probably lame for those of you who live or come from the northern regions of the country, but it's interesting to me.
